There exist several kinds of buckets, but one that every Thai knows is a rectangular bucket made with zinc called “peep” in Thai. A peep usually contains dried food or oil and can be seen mostly in mom-and-pop shops. The bucket is mentioned in certain Thai idioms, such as ‘kick a peep’ and ‘wearing a peep.’ Even though there are no official descriptions of these sayings in any idiom books, people universally understand their meaning.
‘Wearing a peep’ refers to the action of a person who wants to cover their shame by putting a peep on their head. It is not clear why a peep specifically, and not another wearable utensil, is used in this idiom. It could be said that the peep has specific physical and cultural perceptions, which are interesting characteristics for artists and designers.
“LEAVE THE BUCKET AND CARRY ON” is an art exhibition that uses this interesting object as a theme and inspiration to find other possibilities of creativity and interpretation. Artists and designers taking part in this exhibition aim to create joyful artworks. In addition, the exhibition is set to take place around the celebration of the New Year, a time of hope for a better future. People use this occasion to leave their mistakes and shame behind and make new goals for their lives. It is a time to take off your bucket, as it were, laugh, and carry on.

ปีบ คือ ภาชนะทำด้วยสังกะสีเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยม สำหรับบรรจุสิ่งของ อาจสะกดว่า”ปี๊บ”ก็ได้ ส่วนใหญ่ที่พบเห็นใช้บรรจุของกิน,ขนมแห้งหรือของเหลวบางชนิดที่ต้องใช้หรือ ขายในปริมาณมาก ปีบเป็นภาชนะที่ใช้งานกันมานานตั้งคนไทยคุ้นเคยกับลักษณะรูปร่างของมันจึงมี คำเรียกเฉพาะประเภทของภาชนะนี้ แต่ในภาษาอังกฤษไม่มี เมื่อมีคำเฉพาะและคนในสังคมคุ้นเคยจึงมีสำนวนที่เกี่ยวของกับปีบซึ่งเป็นที่ เข้าใจตรงกันโดยทั่วไปอยู่แล้ว ได้แก่ ตีปีบ เตะปีบ และปีบคลุมหัว แม้จะไม่มีบันทึกไว้อย่างเป็นทางการถึงที่มาและความหมายในหนังสือรวบรวมสำนวนไทย
สำนวน ปีบคลุมหัว หมายถึง อาการที่ต้องการปิดบังความน่าอับอายที่ผู้ใส่ต้องการซ่อนเอาไว้ ไม่มีที่มาแน่ชัดว่าทำไมต้องเป็นภาชนะนี้ไม่ใช้วัตถุอื่น เช่น กะละมัง, หม้อ, โหล, ไห หรือ หมวก ดังนั้นปีบจึงเป็นภาชนะที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะทางกายภาพและมีความหมายในเชิง วัฒนธรรมและสังคม การหาความเป็นไปได้อื่นๆและตีความหมายของวัตถุที่มีคุณสมบัตินี้เป็นเรื่อง น่าตื้นเต้นเสมอสำหรับผู้สร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะและนักออกแบบ
นิทรรศการ “LEAVE THE BUCKET AND CARRY ON” นำเสนอการสร้างสรรค์ที่มีวัตถุต้นความคิด คือ ปีบกับเรื่องราวน่าอายในชีวิตที่ผ่านเข้ามาของผู้สร้างสรรค์ ด้วยมุมมองตลกสนุกสนาน จัดขึ้นในวาระมาบรรจบของปีใหม่และปีเก่า เพราะเป็นช่วงเวลาที่หลายๆคนตั้งหน้าตั้งตารอเหมือนเทศกาลสำคัญอื่นๆ เพราะช่วงเวลานี้เป็นช่วงเวลาของงานสังสรรค์รื่นเริง ได้ไปพบคนที่เราคิดถึง ได้รับและได้ให้ของขวัญพร้อมคำอวยพร พวกเราจะถูกย้ำเตือนให้คิดทบทวนถึงสิ่งที่ได้เกิดขึ้นในปีเก่าเพื่อปรับปรุง หรือพัฒนาตนเองไปสู่ปีใหม่ ทุกคนต่างหวังว่าในวันเวลาแห่งอนาคตนั้นจะเป็นช่วงเวลาดีๆของชีวิต เรื่องราวที่น่าอายซึ่งได้ผ่านพ้นมาก็สมควรจะถูกเก็บเอาไว้เป็นบทเรียนหรือ ลืมเลือนไปเสีย สิ่งใดที่นำมาปกปิดปกคลุมกายและใจไว้ก็ได้เวลาเอาออก ถอดปีบแล้วเชิดหน้าเปลี่ยนเป็นตัวเบาๆกับใจสบายๆ ยิ้มรับอนาคตกันอีกครั้ง

Guise
Tuang’s works featured in this exhibition was a series of three customized buckets with electronics entitles “Guise.” The series made from simple IR and phototransistor sensors, small motors, and random left-over household goods. It was inspired by the idea that no one can see themself while wearing a mask. This mask is an artifact used to cover something that can be created to match one’s desire. Although It is outside of their visual ability to perceive the appearance without the help of any reflection like, a mirror, but they still can acknowledge how it is by the responses of people who are looking at them. Many things in our life have the same concept of the mask. We cannot see it on ourselves but we can perceive how it is from other people.
