Art Forward Fund Award (AFFA) is a new art competition for young artists who recently graduated from art school. Budyapa Bencharongkul, the director of MOCA Bangkok, and Pongsuang Kunaprasob, the artist and designer who founded Slowmotion Design and Dudesweet, are the co-creators of this program. They hope that AFFA will become a supportive community, generating connections between artists, curators, and collectors and providing the stage for anew generation of creative professions to shine..

AFFA was inaugurated in mid August and its first winner was announced last week. The winning piece is “From the Past” (1. Wedding Rings 2.Monument of Gentlemen 3. Nut) by Thanaphol Inthong, a recent graduate from the department of Fine Arts, Bangkok University, who received 100,000 baht plus with a 5-day trip to Absolut Art Award in Stockholm, Sweden.

Thanaphol talks about the inspiration for, and the concept of his work, “It came from my family’s history. I selected objects that have a story related to those past experiences. I used them to recreate this story with meaning as it freezes and embeds my memories into each of them. The three pieces in this project represent my father, mother and me.”

Another two special awards were given: Art Patron, awarded to “Relationship” by Petcharat Darnduangdee, and Absolut Choice, awarded to “Short Film” by Tinawach Chankloy.

All the finalists’ artworks are currently on show at MOCA Bangkok on G Floor. Admission is free and the exhibition is open until 21 September 2014.
